It is a common cause that for a business to be sustainable, it needs to respond to/consider the environment in which it operates.

Constant re-positioning is required, often on a much larger scale, depending on the environmental factors at play.

Therefore, such changes /transformations in business call for the adoption and implementation of a successful game plan. And this can only be effected by strategic leaders.

I am emphasizing strategic because not all leaders qualify as such. Therefore, the successful implementation of a strategic change in business relies, first and foremost, on the willingness and openness of such leaders in accepting change.

Strategic leaders possess ‘adaptive capacity’ and strategic thinking. They are the change agents, desperately needed in a business that seeks to implement strategic changes.

They have the credibility to initiate and manage the change. In the same breath, they understand the importance of incorporating possibilities of an unsuccessful plan and its consequences, and are prepared to take full accountability.

Therefore, strategic leaders possess and understand the vision behind the change and ensure the following;

  • Communicate their vision throughout the organization/company/business
  • Guide the process effectively
  • Understand the urgency of carrying out the change
  • Be realistic about the challenges/ obstacles that lie ahead
  • Know and understand the desired outcome
  • Fully grasp the costs and resources needed to effect the change

Lastly, consistent communication of progress and developments with ALL stakeholders is pivotal.
